I’ve read quite a few quotes and posts on words in recent weeks. No question, our words are power-packed and we might want to evaluate just what kind of power they hold.
As I was reading through scripture, it came to me weeks ago, that our words can be either a balm or a bomb. I have fumed a few words in my day that would make Hiroshima look like a walk in the park.
The Bible goes so far as saying our tongues hold the power of life and death. (Proverbs 18.21)
Or how about this? On judgment day we will be held accountable for every.single.idle.word.we’ve.every.spoken. (Matthew 12.36)
Rash words are like stabs from a sword but wise words bring healing. Ouch! (Proverbs 12.18)
How about the person who is so quick to speak without any thought of the words or pain they will produce? The Word says there is more hope for a fool than for him. (Proverbs 29.20)
How about that one person who is always nice. You know the one, just once you want to hear her let it rip. But she never does, at least not in your hearing.
The Message says “the right word at the right time is like a fine piece of custom jewelry.” (Proverbs 25.11)
The one who restrains his words has knowledge and one who keeps a “cool” spirit has understanding. (Proverbs 17.27)
Do you want your words to be like a tree of life? Then keep your words gentle! (Proverbs 15.4)
Who doesn’t like honey? Grace words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body! (Proverbs 16.23-24)
Now, for the truth-in-love words. How do you deliver them? How do you receive them?
Sometimes a friend has to speak truth in love – that friend is called faithful. (Proverbs 27.6)
Do you know it is caring to speak hard things to someone you love? Better to speak than not to because “you love them too much.” (Proverbs 27.5)
Children need to hear words of truth, with discipline, to increase their wisdom! (Proverbs 29.15)
Honest words, spoken in love, can bring restoration. (Galatians 6.1)
It was the build words spoken to me by my Grandmother in 1983 that got my attention. You can read about that here.
Bombs. Balms. Builds.
