Why I Do What I Do
About once a year I begin evaluating “exactly what am I doing?” Do you do that? I want what I do to matter. To leave an impression. To help (even) one person. This past Sonday our pastor Tim Cox Jr. spoke on “platform.” One of the points he made, and this is my paraphrase…
“Platform, everyone has one — we either build up or tear down.”
Today, I want to share with you the heart of the matter. These types of posts intimidate me because I’m never sure how much to share and how much to keep tucked away! Getting back to platform.
I consider myself a Truth Agent; conveying the Truth as found in the Word of God. I am a preacher with keyboard!
Today, I released my thirteenth self-published book. You might ask, “Have you ever pursued traditional publishing?”
The answer to that is YES! In the early 1990’s I did an exhaustive cycle of submissions, and the rejections ended up exhausting me!
I began working on my very first book, A Pruned Branch, in 1994. It took 10 years to complete and in 2004 I left my local print shop with 100 copies of the most beautiful, spiral-bound, glossy-cover 8 x 11 inch book. I sold every single one of them and even had a book signing at our downtown Christian Bookstore. I felt accomplished. (Sidenote: it is no longer spiral-bound.)
You see, one morning in 1994 I fell on my knees, then on my face, and pleaded with God to be published. He said in a clear-as-a-bell response, “Susan, you just worry about writing – I will do the rest.”
THAT is what I’ve doing for the last (almost) 25 years! Last month I went to my 50th high school reunion – it was quite an epiphany for me. I saw 150 of my peers and the first thought in my head was…
How do I measure up?
There were doctors, wealthy entrepreneurs, successful business people, savvy retired women and a host of other superlative-types! Funny how we measure ourselves against our friends. Before I got into wallowing, my good, good, faithful Father said to me,
“Oh no you don’t – you are doing exactly what I’ve told you to do.”
Yes, Lord. Thank You, Lord.
This is exactly why I do what I do.
