Those 7 Churches
Yes, we went to real church again, and, yes, our Pastor is still teaching from The Revelation. It’s funny because after writing last week’s post I knew I would continue with Revelation 2 and made lots of notes BEFORE Church on Sunday.
I am NO Bible scholar – but sometimes it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know what the Spirit is saying. And, in this case, in Revelation 2 and Revelation 3 – the Spirit is talking loudly and with extreme clarity. Pastor Jerry only taught on the first church listed, The Church of Ephesus. Title of his sermon?
You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling! Pastor Jerry Madden
What can we learn from this text?
I like to think of it as “learning what not to do.” In chapter 2 of Revelation, Jesus is indeed speaking to 7 “real” churches.
Today, we refer to ourselves as ‘the church,’ because we are followers of Christ and His Word. Yes, we can relate all of this personally and that is what we are going to do today.
Ephesus…”You’ve lost that loving feeling!”
Ready to learn WHAT NOT TO DO?
The Church of Ephesus [the loveless church] – never lose your/our/my first love. I don’t know about you, but when I asked Jesus into my heart as an 8-year old girl, I just couldn’t wait to tell someone. I ran to my grandparents’ home around the corner and blurted it out before my feet crossed the threshold. I was excited. Or, how about when you first fell in love? How tender it was. Every thought centered around your special person. (2.4)
That is how Jesus wants us to feel about Him – every single day.
The Church at Smyrna [the persecuted church] – do not fear, be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life. Needs no other explanation! There are at least 39 things presented to us every single day to be afraid of – but, the Spirit of God says DO NOT BE AFRAID. (2.10)
The Church at Pergamos [the compromising church] – do not support or participate in evil politics, platform, or practices. We must not compromise our convictions. Know what you believe and be ready to share your Hope. (2.14)
The Church in Thyatira [the corrupt church] – beware of who you listen to, there are wolves in sheep’s clothing. If it looks wrong, sounds wrong, and acts wrong? It is wrong. Hear me for a moment…killing babies is NEVER right. NEVER. NEVER. I can never and will never support someone who is pro-choice. (2.21)
The Church at Sardis [the dead church] – have you ever been in a dead church? Oooph! I have. Do not sleep! Stay alert! Wake up, O! Sleeper! Let’s get our heads out of the sand, wake up, shake off the grit and be alert. (2.1-2)
The Church of the Laodiceans [the lukewarm church] – never be “lukewarm” or indifferent in your faith. The words in red are a strong rebuke, “So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth.” This is not where we want to find ourselves. Are we passionate about our faith in Christ? If not, ask the Lord to fan the flame! Ignite our hearts and our faith and restore our first LOVE! (3.16)
I am convicted to take personal inventory.
One more thing. People change. I will not hold someone prisoner to sins or immoralities of their past. IF you knew all the bad things I did when I was on the run from God – you would be horrified! But, I am a new person because of Christ’s love, grace, and mercy. And, now in this present time I can speak to you truth from God’s Word. I am NOW bearing good fruit for the Kingdom.
Our nation is on the edge of collapse and we, as believers better be praying and agreeing with heaven for our country’s future – it is imperative we seek Truth, and vote Truth. I refuse to let the enemy have our great country. Pray like freedom depends on it – because it does.
