I was scrolling through Facebook last week and I saw a different take on a quote I’ve heard for years. In the past I’ve heard it quoted as a “God-shaped hole” but the word vacuum conjured up a whole new mental picture for this over-active imagination of mine!
I am thinking out loud on my blog this week. You may or may not agree with what I’m about to (try and) explain. But here goes.
Do any of you have one of those food sealers? The kind that suck out all the air from the package, and then magically seals it shut. We do and use it every summer to preserve and freeze a lot of our homegrown veggies. IF that vacuum seal gets compromised the contents of the bag expand and loosen, some moisture may form and the freshness is gone, BUT, the contents ARE STILL THERE – just not as nutrient-rich as they would be if the vacuum seal had remained in tact.Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), Making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit. Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord… Ephesians 5.15-19 (AMP)
[In verse 18, the tense of the Greek for be filled makes clear that such a Spirit-filled condition does not stop with a single experience, but it is maintained by “continually being filled,” as is commanded here in Ephesians.]
I have several family members who are ever in my prayers. One is not a possessor of God’s salvation. Two are possessors of His redemptive Gift but unfortunately they are not walking with Him – they did at one time, but not currently. Their vacuum-seal has been compromised by the ways of the world; they’ve stretched out of shape and gotten loose by the contaminants of the world. BUT, the content, and in this case, Jesus Christ’s salvation is still there.
I remember a time in my own adult life when I allowed the contaminants of this world into my life and tossed me completely out of the vacuum seal of God’s protection because I was no longer “being filled” and “maintained” with the Holy Spirit. God, in His mercy and grace, extended His righteous hand to me and drew me back. Ever since then, I keep a close check on the ‘seal’ and I make sure my life is continually being filled with Spiritual things.
How’s your vacuum seal?
If you want to expand on these thoughts, I encourage you to do a keyword search on the word sealed – I did on BibleGateway – and found some great scripture references.
