Several weeks ago I blogged about Sole Hope, an amazing ministry in Uganda Africa. This week I want to share a blog from another favorite ministry of mine, Barnabas Fellowship, started and led by our friends Ken and Diana Harbor, in the mid 1980’s. There’s no big corporate headquarters for this ministry, targeting the spiritual and physical needs, in Nepal. Instead there are local brothers and sisters in Nepali villages who are the beautiful feet of Jesus, taking His Good News over the rugged mountains and countryside of this third-world country. The country is desperately poor and unfortunately the daughters of these precious people are targeted by human traffickers promising these families that if their daughters go with them they will give them profitable household jobs and their paychecks can help support the families back home. This a great lie of the enemy. These beautiful young girls, with their dark chocolate eyes, get whisked away to be child prostitutes and sex slaves. Thus, Save The Daughters, was born from Barnabas Fellowship. Corporate offices for this ministry is in the spare bedroom of a humble, small 8-acre farmstead in Forest, Virginia. Both Ken and Diana are tentmakers, working in the field of Acupuncture and Massage Therapy. Every dime given to Barnabas goes into the ministry of discipling and providing for the people of Nepal. A little goes a long way in the villages of Nepal.
This month, Ken’s newsletter struck a tender chord in my heart and with his permission, I share it with my blogging community:
While You Were Sleeping!
Yes, I know it was a movie in 1995 with Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman, and yes, we like it and have seen it several times. But it’s also the line of a famous investing firm that says something like, “We safeguard your future, growing your investment even while you are sleeping.” Whatever. So this month, I thought I’d show you what was going on while you were sleeping. But, our investments change lives and have eternal consequences. particularly for those who invest and lay up with The Barnabas Fellowship.
While you were sleeping, gifts met the need of Dil Bahadur Biswokarma, an older village Pastor from the district of Dhading in Nepal suffering from Tuberculosis. He was served in Kathmandu.
While you were sleeping, gifts met the needs of Januka Devi Choudhari, a faithful widow from a place called Nawalparasi who is suffering from skin cancer. She was served.
While you were sleeping, a team of 14 are traveling in the remote regions of Muga Nepal. This mountain area has rarely seen any form of help or assistance at all and can’t even afford a community health worker from the government. We are spreading our seeds of Hope and Eternity while educating families on health, hygiene, and the value of a woman. Two house groups have been started in this place.
While you were sleeping, 23 children from our orphanage in Kathmandu received new shoes, uniforms, books, and other tools for their next school year. They are clean, well fed, happy, loved, and not ashamed because someone met this need.
While you were sleeping, little Rupa, a sweet Christian girl from Nepalganj was provided enough money to take her graduation exams in school. She doesn’t have parents and relies on the other Christians and her house cleaning jobs to get school funds. Now, she can take her exam and search for a better job to help herself. We were able to change her circumstance with just a small gift given to our ministry.
While you were sleeping, five men traveled to the border area of Mohattari, Nepal, to conduct two weeks of intensive anti-trafficking ministry. During this time they will warn, educate, encourage, and spread Good News among families and young girls in danger, while enduring mosquitoes and 106-degree temperatures.
While you were sleeping, two orphan brothers, Bhaka and Diraj, were taken into a Christian home in Nepal. They were being separated, but Barnabas supplied funds for a local pastor to take them and raise them in his home with his children. This pastor and his wife have an excellent reputation for loving kids.
While you were sleeping, we made preparations to place two tube wells in a village where we had sent a pastor years before. The neighboring village doesn’t want to give them water, so we are solving the issue with a gift given by caring people of less than $450. Christians, and Hindus alike, will drink from our wells.
Talk’s Cheap! We win in the end! Ken & Diana Harbour
Postscript: I am honored and privileged to be a monthly partner with this ministry. Two brothers in Nepal are on Facebook and we get to “chat” once in a while and I am so humbled and encouraged by their fervor and faithfulness. I encourage you, dear readers, if your heart beat a bit faster as you read Ken’s letter, please don’t hesitate to click on one of the links and be obedient to Holy Spirit’s prompting and leading. This truly is a ministry where ten US dollars earns Kingdom interest, WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING!
