Early A.D. – Capernaum
Jesus had just left Capernaum and there were two blind men following Him and they were crying out, “Son of David, have mercy on us!” Apparently, Jesus entered His destination place and these two blind men followed Him inside.
Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I am ABLE to do this?” To which they answered, “Yes, Lord.” (Matthew 9:27-31)
1984 – Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho
I was sitting around a bonfire, high on marijuana, living in sin, wallowing in a prodigal’s pigpen. As I stared into the flames, God spoke to me and showed me something too awful to share. I remember as though it was yesterday – I said in my heart to my God, “I promise You … please help me.”
For this reason…; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know Whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is ABLE to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day. (2 Timothy 1:12)
1988 – Major life change; move from FL to NC
We relocated from South Florida to the mountains of North Carolina. I had stayed true to my bonfire promise to God but still didn’t have a close relationship with Him. At times, doubt over our move would overwhelm me. But, there we were: relocated, unemployed, and flat broke. I would cry to God in my undeveloped faith, “Are we going to be okay?”
Now to Him who is ABLE to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. (Ephesians 3:20)
He did. We were.
1992 – Lansing NC
Alone at an altar, confessing to my God that it was time for me to grow up in Him and get off the fence and recommit my life to Him. “God, I want to but it’s so hard, will You help me?”
And, God is ABLE to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)
Late 1993 – Jefferson NC
Watching others have real victory in their daily lives, I became jealous and wanted more God and less me! For the first time in my (then) 43-year life I realized how necessary it was to unleash Holy Spirit in my life. It was as though He was in me but all bound up with no freedom to move in me. I prayed, “O God I want all of You, fill me up, Lord with everything You are! I want to live with victory and joy in You and fill me with Your glory!”
Now to Him who is ABLE to keep you from stumbling; and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. (Jude 24)
Fast forward 2007 – Home
Pulling the sheets up over my head, crying out to God, “I cannot go through this again – I cannot watch as my daughter destroys her life, let me die, God, before she kills herself – I cannot bear it one more day.” My dear friend prayed with me – a prayer of power, faith, and hope. I uttered a lame, “Amen, let it be, Lord.”
ABLE to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him (Christ), since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25)
He did. She was.
2011 – The World
Wars; rumors of wars; uprisings in Israel; U.S. economy stinks; unemployment rises; earthquakes; Tsunamis; friends losing homes and financial security. I cry out to my Three Best Friends, “O God, my hope is in You, lead us to the Rock that is higher than we are; hide me in the shelter of Your wings; be our Refuge and our Fortress – deliver us from the evil one. My God, in You will I trust.”
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is ABLE to subdue all things to Himself. (Philippians 3:20)
Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I am ABLE to do this?” To which they answered, “Yes, Lord.” “According to your faith let it be to you…” (Matthew 9:27-31)
…and their eyes were opened.
