Mom’s Day 2017
I want to do something a bit different this year but as I sit here I’m not sure where my thoughts are headed. It may be a post of rambling and rabbit trails and if that’s how it turns out then that is where it is supposed to go. For some reason my head is filled with memories this year of our childhood. I write “our” because it didn’t belong only to me but to my sister, Peggy, as well. We are four years apart yet we were pretty connected. Of course when she was in high school I was just the pain in the neck sister that wanted to tag along and a lot of the times she let me. I really like my one and only sibling. She’s a little weird like me but when we are together? It’s a really good time with a lot of laughter, a lot of eye-rolling, a lot of chips and chatter, and some “let’s not talk about THAT’s.” About five or six years ago we went on a road trip to South Florida to deliver Hannah back to her parents after a brief Christmas visit – we stayed in a friend’s condo in Stuart. On our drive home she asked me to read something and handed me a file folder with a stack of printed pages. I began reading it aloud, our own audio book – it was her first novel. Ten hours and 300 pages later we pulled into the driveway in NC.
You have to publish this, I told her. She did.
Peg and I grew up in our Mom’s home. Our father pretty much abandoned us when I was 12. He had roaming eyes and finally they took him away from us. We were the quintessential house of females, the Queens of PMS. My mom was a devout woman of faith. Peg and I were devout rebels. We both went down some pretty rocky roads, and I’m not talking about ice cream, but in our 30’s we came to our senses, Mom’s prayers and Jesus rescued us. We’ve never looked back.
Between us we have seven children, ten grands, and she has five great grands.
We have both been divorced one time and both of us are remarried.
She lives in Florida. I live in North Carolina.
She is an extrovert. I am a social introvert.
She’s pretty cool. I’m cooler. Just kidding!
Happy Mom’s Day, Peg – so very glad we still have each other!
xo
Who are you celebrating this year?
This week I’ll be linking up with Inspire Me Monday, Testimony Tuesday, Tell His Story, Tea and Word, Porch Stories, Coffee for Your Heart, Tune In Thursday, Dance With Jesus, Fresh Market Friday, and Glimpses of His Beauty.
What a wonderful Women’s Day post!
XO
Tammy
Thanks, Tam! A fun and poignant post for my dear sister!!!! xo
Wow! Thank you for such a memory and a blessing. You know Sestra we are so blessed to have each other. We’ve been through just about every possible scenario. Our hair may be different, we may have a few more pounds, we’re older but our smiles are the same! All the pictures bring back so many thoughts…And we have the glue that keeps us together. HIS Name is Jesus Christ! Aren’t you glad that all those prayers from Grandma and Mother opened the gate of heaven again for us? I am not sure how often we saw each other when I lived in NC but I really think I miss you. I feel a trip getting closer!
Thank you for being there for me when the world fell apart, there was no water, no heat and I tried to be brave but I was terrified! For encouraging me along the way when I smelled like French Fries and Chicken and I was tired and didn’t know the way to go.
Thank you for encouraging me to finish my book! I would have never done it and here I am almost finished with number two!
Psalm 91:15-16 Because he [they] has set his [their] love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him [them]; I will set him [them] on high, because he [they] has known My name. He [they] shall call upon Me, and I will answer him [them]; I will be with him [them] in trouble; I will deliver him [them] and honor him [them]. With long life I will satisfy him [them], And show him [them] My salvation
Thank you Sestra. I love you — You are blessed and highly favored!
As you are. xoxo
What a sweet celebration of your sister, Susan. We had very similar upbringings! Our house was full of estrogen as well-just me, my mom and sister. My dad left my mom for another woman when I was 12 too. And I definitely went down some rough roads just as you did. Blessings to you and your sweet sister this Mother’s Day :).
Oh wow! There are lots of parallels in our lives and we’re turning out okay. Praise be to God!
Sweet! My Mom has been in heaven almost 15 years, but I have a mother in law, an awesome sister, lots of aunts, and my Dad’s wife. I can’t imagine life without them as I raise my girls!
“I have all my sisters with me!” ♫
What a beautiful celebration of Aunt Peg!! Happy Mothers Day!
Auntie Peg…
This is such a sweet, sweet post. I’m not sure what about it has me sitting here with tears rolling down my cheeks. I think it is your very special bond of going through so much together. Beautiful.
Happy Mother’s Day dear friend,
Patti
Aw….Patti, tears flow at the oddest moments, don’t they? I can be sitting here and someone will post a youtube song or a quote and it’s like the floodgates open! Love you friend.
I’m such a fan of your stories about family. You don’t shy away from talking about the hard parts, but you do it with such a light touch — humor and grace.
Blessings to you, Sister Sue!
It’s the hard parts that make the good parts all the sweeter!!!
I have a much older sister–9 years–but I feel very close to her even with the age difference. She was like a second mom to me in many ways and so I send her a Mother’s Day card every year. I’m so glad you have a great relationship with your sister too, Susan. And a road trip like that sounds like an incredible idea for me and my sister someday too. I’m curious what you mean by “social introvert.” Does that mean you’re very extroverted in your own home but introverted in social situations? Happy Mother’s Day to you, my friend!
It means I know how to be social but prefer small social experiences rather than larger than life events! Small groups, one on one – those are my preferences!!! I get energized by being home alone.
Oh thank you for sharing sweet memories this morning! I did not have sisters growing up–3 older brothers instead. But the sisters-in-Jesus and sisters-in-law that I have been blessed with over the years fill my heart with sweet memories too! I’m rejoicing for their gifts!
Sisters-in-love and Jesus are a wonderful substitute!
Wow!
I always enjoy your sharings of your life, your memories, thoughts, feelings and inspirations. Thanks for being so generous and enriching the lives of others around you! Happy Mother’s Day!
Though I will not be spending Mother’s Day with my 3 children or my 11 grandchildren (daughter and a granddaughter are in Italy right now, One of my sons is on his way to Netherlands and the other lives in Raleigh with his four children while we still are in Florida) I am grateful to God for the special privilege of allowing me to be a mother and also for my Beautiful mother who went on to her reward in 2000.
Wishing a blessed and happy Mother’s Day to all !
And, thank YOU for the update into your life!!!
Sweet celebration of Peggy! You two are very blessed to have each other! Guard that blessing….satan would love to take it from you both! XOXO
Amen, sister!!!
Beautiful rabbit trail indeed! May we all take the time for more rabbit trails like these 🙂
I must say it was a fun run!!!

Such a wonderful writing………but, it made me a bit sad……….”who” will I celebrate?……..in this broken family of ours……..who?
I will celebrate Mama Ruth! Yes, I will. And I will celebrate JESUS.
And, we celebrate one another, in love.
Absolutely!!
Susan, thank you for giving us a glimpse into your life and the path God has taken you and your sister on. The prayers of a Godly mother are so powerful. What encouragement to read that all three of you ladies now love and serve the Lord. I hope uou all have a wonderful and blessed Mothers Day weekend.
Thank you, Horace!
Aww, how sweet! I don’t have a sister. I got stuck with my brother. lol I love him though!
I always wanted a brother!!!
I love learning more about you Susan. You have a great way of telling a story with a little humor woven in. I hope you have a blessed Mother’s Day!
There are volumes, my dear, volumes.
Love, Love, Love!
I love this. I am sad what your father missed out on but I am so glad Jesus found you both! You are funny too, Susan – keep your posts coming. I am heading over to check out this book of hers. And PS: you and Patricia Krank aren’t related?? Ever ytime I see her profile pic I think, besides hair color you all look similar!!
