Lift Your Gift
And Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship, 32 to design artistic works, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of artistic workmanship.
34 “And He has put in his heart the ability to teach, in him and Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all manner of work of the engraver and the designer and the tapestry maker, in blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine linen, and of the weaver—those who do every work and those who design artistic works.
And Bezalel and Aholiab, and every gifted artisan in whom the Lord has put wisdom and understanding, to know how to do all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, shall do according to all that the Lord has commanded.” Exodus 35.30-35 and 36.1
New Testament
There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12.4-11
We All Have A Gift
Today, it seems it’s more important to know your Enneagram numbers than to know what your spiritual gifts are! As believers and followers of Christ – I suggest we spend some time learning what theyare. It’s important. Most of us (probably) know – I know I have the gift of encouragement and I know I have the gift of writing. I also know what gifts aren’t mine – I do not have the gift of teaching.
It is imperative we learn what our gifts are and then exercise them. You can take a survey here and learn what gifts you were given.
Old vs. New
In the Old Testament Moses called those who held gifts to build the Tabernacle.
All who are gifted artisans among you shall come and make all that the Lord has commanded: 11 the tabernacle, its tent, its covering, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars, and its sockets; 12 the ark and its poles, with the mercy seat, and the veil of the covering; 13 the table and its poles, all its utensils, and the showbread; 14 also the lampstand for the light, its utensils, its lamps, and the oil for the light; 15 the incense altar, its poles, the anointing oil, the sweet incense, and the screen for the door at the entrance of the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burnt offering with its bronze grating, its poles, all its utensils, and the laver and its base; 17 the hangings of the court, its pillars, their sockets, and the screen for the gate of the court; 18 the pegs of the tabernacle, the pegs of the court, and their cords; 19 the garments of ministry, for ministering in the holy place—the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to minister as priests.’ ” Exodus 35.10-19
There were metal workers, gem cutters, seamstresses, and potters. They came together and each exercised their gifts and talents and built the Tabernacle.
Today, the Church needs each and every person to come together and use their gifts: ministering, prophesying, praying, teaching, helping, discerning, and encouraging.
Without people using their God-given gifts, the Church suffers.
Are We Using Ours?
I work at mine – every week. Are you?
Amen! I just read an interesting article on the enneagram-glad I didn’t jump on that band wagon!
Xo
A lot of folks have, Tam’
My gifts are like yours! Encouragement + writing = blogger. 😉 I must admit that I’m fascinated by differences in personality and gifts. I probably would take the enneagram test if given the chance. The important thing for me in learning about those things, though, has been a boost in confidence understanding yourself brings and using that knowledge of my strengths and weaknesses for God’s glory. It all comes back to whether what we’re doing honors Him, doesn’t it?
We can always glean something useful!
God has given each of us gifts and talents which will bless others and bring honor to Him. May we use them wisely so that one day when we stand before Him, we will hear the words, “Well done!”
I long to hear those words!
Thank you. I found the Spiritual Gift survey eye opening. 1- was Mercy 2- was Teaching.
There you go! I knew MERCY would be strong.
I wonder if the guy doing the engraving got jealous of the guy blowing the trumpets? What a waste of time that would be. Mine are exhortation and teaching. And baking. Hee hee. Have a great trip!
Thanks Sue! You are constantly using your gifts!
Susan, what a beautiful post. God has given us each gifts. When we use them for His glory, it’s amazing how He works in and through us. My gifts are encouragement/exhortation and teaching.
And, you use them quite well, Jeanne.
I once took a spiritual gifts test that was quite involved. It said my spiritual gift was change. I’m not sure exactly what that even means ;). I struggle with unforeseen changes, but I do feel called to make people think about change–so maybe that’s it.
Change? I never saw that one listed as a spiritual gift!!! I do love healthy changes though!
