Okay, so what is it in the summer that closes my eyes at 9 p.m. Is it summertime or over-sixty-syndrome!!! But I do get up early – so that counts, right? Yesterday morning it was 3 a.m. Today I slept in…5 a.m. Five is the magic number on Friday’s because it’s FIVE MINUTE FRIDAY with Kate. Let’s TRY this. O! Wait! that’s the word prompt…

This is a scanned page from Hannah’s scrapbook – taken probably eight or nine years ago at a street festival we went to every summer when she was growing up. You see Hannah’s parents drove her up here every summer since she was 5 – 1/2 years old. The first summer she stayed 3 weeks and as she grew her weeks here grew. Until she would stay the entire months of June and July. When she was little, that meant day camp while I worked –
Our summers were the best. But, Hannah began her life afraid – she was scared to try new things. Enter Mimi…
Just do it afraid.
Try it Han – you might like it.
Com’on you don’t know unless you TRY.
Every.single.time. She would try it and she would accomplish it. She rappelled walls. She read books. She tubed rivers. She dove off diving boards. She jumped from boats. She was pulled by a tow rope on the back of a boat. She kayaked. She hiked. She bicycled.
She always tries.
She always makes it.
Hannah has taken this characteristic into college. She has done HARD THINGS. But…
She keeps TRYing.
And she keeps accomplishing.
We couldn’t be more proud of her if we TRIED!

This was so easy to write and the time flew by – it brought back so many happy, sometimes TRYing times – but oh so worth it! By the way, Hannah will be 21 January 2018!

It’s amazing how we can accomplish much more than we think if we are willing to give it a try. I’m glad you were able to encourage Hannah to take on challenges and face her fears.
I preach to myself about this too, Lesley.
This is a great post, Susan. I’m sure Hannah loves being a star on this post, and in her sweet Mimi’s heart too!
She and Simon are the stars of my life!!!
Thank you Mimz! Xo
Thank YOU, Hannah.
We can do anything if we just set our mind to it!
We really can. Loved your post.
She sounds like a incredible young women and I wish her a Happy Birthday. Thank you for giving us the chance to get to know her. Have a blessed day.
She is something – but as humble as pie and a heart to serve Jesus!
Thank you for sharing these sweet memories of your granddaughter with us. I am reminded of if you first do not succeed, try, try, and try again. I hope that you have a lovely weekend!
Jolene, just keep trying. And, thank you.
Susan, it is so nice to get back to reading your posts again! I’ve been facing a lot of challenges lately and reading this was the perfect amount of encouragement and motivation I needed. Thank you!
Oh goodie, Christina – we’ve missed you.
Susan, you have done a wonderful thing with Hannah who started scared. I struggle as a parent with our older son who is introverted and shy. God is helping me honor who he is and sometimes to nudge him outside his comfort zone. #thankyouJesus
Julie, we began fighting the “fear” “I can’t” very early in Hannah. We were unrelenting. Poor girl!!!
What A blessing that you had all of those summers with Hannah. Im sure she carries a great deal of you and who she is. ❤️
I know she has a big corner in my heart – along with her cous’ Simon!!!
Great post, Susan. So glad you also looked back and linked from two years ago. I did as well and found great encouragement there!
Love,
Tammy
(#43 and 44 this week)
Great minds, girlfriend!!!
What a lovely tribute to Hannah, and to the value of TRYing!
Yoda was wrong. To try IS to do!
Ah…you disagree with Yoda?
i had to say this with my caution lad a lot too. “just try boy, you might like it. Try it, might not be as hard as you think.” amazing what the willingness to try does for a person.
It is a faith-builder when we try something even doing it afraid.
She’s braver than me, climbing that wall. Been afraid of heights since I was a kid. Sadly, fear has kept me from doing a lot of things. Maybe I’ll start with something small, like…hmmmm, I’ll have to think about that!
Despise not small beginnings, Marie! Have I ever told you my middle name is Marie?
Also, Mimz would always say this when I was fearful, “be bold, be strong, for the Lord your God goes with you”. We would shout it, yell it and sing it at the top of our lungs. Even today, whenever I am fearful or discouraged I’ll sing/say it to myself. It is so true! Until the end of the age, He is with us.
We still sing it, don’t we Han’?
I love the stories of your grandkids! And this really resonates:
Just do it afraid.
I need that whispered in my ear every day. Those kids have a fabulous Mimz!
