Kate said RISK
Summer of 1983, hubs and I took our first extended road trip. We left south Florida and went all the way to the panhandle of Idaho. We drove across the USA on the southern route, which took us across the panhandle of Texas and into New Mexico.
New Mexico is when it got interesting.
High Risk Route
We were driving along, following our map, when we came to a road sign with barricades.
High Risk Road for the next 30 miles – TRAVEL AT YOUR OWN RISK.
A no-brainer
We looked at one another and said, “Let’s do it!” The road was wrought with potholes, rocks, cow crossings, and some of the most beautiful sites of the entire road trip. It was late summer and the grove of Aspens was a sparkling, golden light show in the warm sunlight. We walked through the trees and saw carvings dating back into the 1800’s. We left our initials in a tree too!
It was a risk
But one we were willing to take. We made it through without incident and we still talk about it all these years later.
How about you?
Do you take risks? Do you do things afraid? Or, do you hang back and wonder, “What if?”
Sounds like a memorable trip! And yes, I’ve learned I have to do things afraid – otherwise I wouldn’t do very much at all!
Isn’t it the truth, Lesley?
I have to be honest and say that I’m sure neither my hubs or I would have gone forward. We would have so turned around. And missed it:( (makes me wonder what else we may have missed!!?)
Definitely not much of risk-takers here:)
That so surprises me, Jennifer!!!
When the sign says ‘No Admittance’,
I will just admit myself,
for punishment is a mere pittance
compared to what is on the shelf
that I strive and jump to reach,
and then, when I can grasp the prize
the world around me is pale-bleached
by what’s beheld now in my eyes.
It’s not a person, place or thing
that so excites the joyous senses;
it’s the feelings that I bring
for leaping these forbidden fences.
In priceless currency I am paid;
for I have shown I’m not afraid.
Will you please stop jumping…and no more leaping. Ya hear ole man? xoxo
‘Tis the joy that makes me jump,
and belief inspires the leap.
XOXOXO back!
Well, one thing we know….Andrew has not lost his mo-jo!
Sometimes the risk is totally worth taking! 😉
You’ve taken some!
What fun!
I have found that isn’t Google maps can sometimes be a risk. We took a family vacation to Gatlinburg one year. We thought we were heading up to Chattanooga them Knoxville and on it to Sevierville but no Google took us straight up the mountain and back down. That was a memorable trip as well.
NOT trustworthy!!! In 1983..Google was a foreign word!
