Kate said gentle.
Odd word for this Good Friday 2021.
Gentle.
One thing that pops into my mind is…
The Romans were not gentle with Jesus the night of His arrest.
The Price He Paid
Was anything but gentle.
Jesus was brutally beat.
… was heinously tortured.
Jesus was pierced.
He was humiliated.
Yet, He went to the cross.
His Condition
His back was ribboned in raw flesh.
His head was pierced with a thorned crown.
His hands and feet were drilled with nine inch barbaric spikes.
Gentle?
Not by any means.
He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth. Isaiah 53.7
The place in the Scripture which he read was this: “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so He opened not His mouth. Acts 8.32
And yet…
Jesus prayed, “Forgive them Father because they have no idea what they are doing and Who they are killing.”
Before the sun set that “good” Friday – many were beginning to understand just WHO HE WAS. Perhaps some repented of their ungentleness.
Today
We remember the cruelty, the pain and humiliation and it changes us – it changes me.
He gently calls us, “To come to Him and receive His gentle invitation and be forever changed.”
I pray you know Him.
Jesus’ gentleness is the face of betrayal, humiliation, and pain blows my mind. What a good and beautiful Shepherd. Thank you, Susan, for writing this and offering this perspective.
Our kind and gentle Shepherd. Thanks for visiting.
Gentle tears from these words.
Our gentle Savior who was treated with such cruelty. xo
Amen. There was nothing gentle about the treatment he received, yet he remained gentle throughout. It makes me pause and wonder at his great love for me.
As it should.
They definitely were not gentle with our Jesus. 🙁 It makes his gentle response even that more miraculous to me. I’ve always been amazed at how he could keep quiet when they were maligning him. Such love in action for us! Hope you have a wonderful Easter, Susan.
Thank you Lisa – how could it not be wonderful? He is risen indeed!
Thank you for sharing these thoughts!! Deirdre FMF#3
Thank you for visiting, Deirdre.
Bummer of a weekend,
beaten, mocked and whipped,
knowing all the while Your friends
have given you the slip.
They don’t want to die with You
upon that windy height;
not that their hearts are untrue,
they’re just full of fright,
lost sheep without a shepherd
bleating through the gloom,
scared of stalking leopard,
scared of their own doom
that they are to blind to see
is banished by Your misery.
They expected a kingdom …. but not the one He spoke of – at least THEN. Now, it all makes perfect sense!
I “remember the cruelty, the pain and humiliation and…it changes me”. Thanking God for His gentleness
So very thankful.
