Kate Motaung held her weekly party last night but I was already in la-la land by nine o’clock. Sometimes a girl just has to sleep! Five Minute Friday is an exercise of fun and for the one hundred plus writers who participate it is a challenge to see where the word takes us. What our focus will be while writing. Oh, but wait THAT is the word prompt! Shall we?
I learned about focus a very long time ago. After being a stay-at-home mom for twelve years I was thrown out into the wonderful world of single mom with a full-time career. Not by choice either. I had to learn to focus or fail – and that second option? Wasn’t an option, if you get my drift.
I worked for *Donald Trump, in the management office of Trump Plaza, West Palm Beach Florida – I was the assistant to the property manager. When Donald bought the in-bankruptcy luxury property he sent a young girl down from his NYC office to whip us into shape. I resented her from the git-go. She was probably ten years younger than me and a typical New Yorker. Now, I can say that because my birth certificate states I’m a Jersey girl!!!
Well anyway, she came into my office and I had the biggest chip on my shoulder, it’s a wonder I didn’t fall flat on my face with the weight of it. She began flitting around, saying this and saying that. Hmm. I was in attack mode BUT I needed my job because I had three little’s that depended on me.
One of the things she taught me, and I consider it one of the most valuable lessons I’ve ever learned, Never Touch a Piece of Paper Twice. When a paper lands on your desk? Deal with it. Handle it. File it. In other words, that piece of paper should get your full-on FOCUS.
I took that little lesson and began applying it to other areas of my life and you know what? It changed a lot of things for me because I tend to be scattered. Now they have a term for it, Adult Attention Disorder! Not sure if I really have it but focusing helps me to accomplish more. I’ve learned to finish one task before moving to another. And, you know what?
Thirty years later? I still remember this lesson and I still practice FOCUSING every single day!
Oh yes, another thing…I learned to value the advice the young whippersnapper had for me – sure wish I could remember her name!
Whatever your hand finds to do? [FOCUS] and do it with all your might! Ecclesiastes 9.10 (my translation)
