I wanted Christmas to be different this year. I haven’t gotten caught up in the crazy gift buying thing in years – I like to gift people when the Spirit moves me. It’s not unusual for me to see something in June and think, “I just have to get this for so and so!”
My cousin sent me Ann Voskamp’s new book, The Greatest Gift, back in October for my birthday. It sat on my shelf until December 1 – Ann has a style of writing that is so distinct and unique. I find myself wanting to write like her, but honestly? It’s impossible! The book is incredibly wonderful; like her: deep, thoughtful, thought-provoking, and insightful treasures on every page. She definitely knows Jesus by His first name!
What is it about a first name? For me it says, “Relationship. Friendship.”
This Advent Season I’ve been meditating on the “coming” of Jesus. Baby Jesus. The Infant Jesus. The Christ Child. I’m sure you can think of several other names used, but I want to meditate on What and Who He is in my life. What do I call Him?
And, it hit me the other day – that I know Him by His first name. I call Him by His first name. We’re on a first-name basis. He calls me Daughter…
I call Him, “Lord.”
Lord Jesus Christ, beloved and only son of the God of the Universe. Mary, conceived by Holy Spirit, gave birth to the God-Man, whose sole (or should it be “soul”?) purpose was to be made a sacrifice for sin, once and for all, so that anyone who calls upon His Name and follows Him can know Him on a first-name basis.
Do you know Him?
