The last time Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s crossed paths on the very same day was back in 1945! Even I wasn’t born yet! Today, one might find red hearts and ashen crosses!
The Lenten practice is an exercise of discipline. In 2017 I wrote a book called the 40 Days of Lent. It is a journey, per se, of the final months of Jesus’ earthly life as He made His way to Jerusalem beginning winter A.D.29. Today is the first day of Lent 2018 and this past week I have noticed how loud social media has become in my home environment.
Last week I had a very busy day in front of me. I had a lot of computer work to complete. And, as I sat at my desk I realized how distracted I was by the dings, pings, and rings escaping my computer speaker! I turned down the volume, but a pop-up kept poking its head on the bottom right corner of the monitor telling me who was saying what on Facebook.
I commented on a blog later that day and confessed, “I didn’t unplug but I did untangle!”
Enter the Holy Season of Lent
As we enter this holy season of Lent, a time of serious reflection and introspection, I want the space around me to get a bit quieter. I want to muffle the pings, dings, and rings and listen for the still small voice. I don’t want to miss anything that He wants to show me.
That simple verse in the Old Testament that has been blown out of context and misinterpreted more than a few times, *For I the Lord your God is a jealous God,” moves me to make space – I believe God is a bit envious over the time spent on electronics rather than time spent with Him and His Word. I remember the days when the alarm would go off and the only buttons I pushed was the coffee pot and the light switch.
Swipe, Wipe, and Type
Today, we swipe, wipe, then type our password and get enthralled in the feeds. I am not condemning, judging, or pointing one of these bony fingers! I am just telling you that the noise of it all is beginning to be deafening.
Only I can fix this in my environment and I plan on doing my utmost to quiet the dings, pings, and rings. I am going to do less swiping, wiping and typing passwords and more morning worship.
Maybe you want to quiet things too.
