Today I want to go “way back” and visit Sarai, Abraham’s wife, her natural hope was gone.
In Genesis 17 verse 15, God Himself tells Abraham that He was changing Sarai’s name to Sarah. Both names mean “Princess” but God was about to do something really big and I feel His changing her name was to bring Sarah into the Covenant He was making with Abraham. Sarah mattered.
In Genesis 18 verse 12, Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord [husband] being old also?”
And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child since I am old?’ (v. 13)
“Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” (v. 14)
Sarah isn’t the only one who laughed…back up to chapter 17 in verse 17 and, “Then Abraham fell on his face AND LAUGHED, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”
Abraham was so comically entertained by God that he actually made a suggestion that his already living son Ishmael (Hagar’s son) be the one who “lived before God” and be the covenant heir. God was firm that it would be the son of Abraham and Sarah who would be the one to fulfill everlasting covenant.
A lot of time passed.
All Natural HOPE Was Gone.
We know the “rest of the story,” don’t we?
What has God told you?
Does it seem impossible? Improbable? No way? Too hard? Not a chance?
All natural hope is gone?
Don’t for a minute believe it. Satan would just love for us to walk in defeat – but spit in his face and remind him HOW BIG YOUR GOD IS.
I am going to stake my life on the HOPE I HAVE IN HIM.
